Q. 17. Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions :- Situations of daily life can be represented by equations in few variables. In the same way, chemical reactions can be represented with the help of symbols of elements and formulae of the substances involved. This method of writing a reaction is known as a chemical equation The substances which combine to react are known as reactants and new substances produced are known as products. An unbalanced chemical equation needs to be balanced which means that an equal number of atoms of different elements are present in the reactant as well as in the product side. Most importantly, the formulae of the compounds are not altered while balancing the equation :-
(A) Chemical equations balancing is in accordance with : *
(B) Law of constant proportions.
(C) Law of combining volumes.
(D) Law of conservation of mass.
(E) Both (a) and (c)

Since in a balanced equation, the amounts and masses of all elements and compounds are equal on both sides of the reaction, it also implies that the mass is conserved. Thus, we can say that a balanced chemical equation is in accordance with the law of conservation of mass.

2. Law of constant proportion states that a chemical compound always contains exactly the same proportion of elements by mass. For a given unique chemical compound, its elemental composition is same for any sample that exists. ... So weight of hydrogen in 18gms or 1 mole water is 2 grams and that of oxygen is 16 grams.

3. The law of combining volumes states that, when gases react together they do so in volume which bears simple whole number ratio provided that the temperature and pressure of the reacting gases and their products remain constant.

4. In physics and chemistry, the law of conservation of mass or principle of mass conservation states that for any system closed to all transfers of matter and energy, the mass of the system must remain constant over time, as the system's mass cannot change, so quantity can neither be added nor be removed.
