Q.2. Answer the following:
i. Define peak value of alternating signal (current or emf).
Answers
Answer:
Definition: The maximum value attained by an alternating quantity during one cycle is called its Peak value. It is also known as the maximum value or amplitude or crest value. The sinusoidal alternating quantity obtains its peak value at 90 degrees as shown in the figure below
The peak value is :
The maximum value of a current or emf that can be obtained by that alternating signal during a full cycle.
- It can be both positive or negative.
In case of Sinusoidal wave form,
Peak value of an alternating current or e.m.f. signal = √2 × the r.m.s. value of the alternating current or e.m.f. signal
In case of square wave form,
Peak value of an alternating current or e.m.f. signal = The r.m.s. value of the alternating current or e.m.f. signal
In case of triangular wave form,
Peak value of an alternating current or e.m.f. signal = √3 × the r.m.s. value of the alternating current or e.m.f. signal
