But chances are your needs where minimal when compared with people who had beyond doubt been without water or food for days.
7. During World War 2, keys et al. studied men who had been fed just enough to stay alive. They found that the men became preoccupied with food thoughts and fantasies. The men delighted in reading cookbooks and exchanging favorite recipes. They forgot about wives, girlfriends and sex. They became apathetic, dispirited, and irritable.
8. There has been considerable evidence that thirst needs are even stronger than hunger needs. When any physiological needs are not satisfied personality changes generally result. Persons who have been without sleep or extended periods have been known to become anxious and hallucinate. Have you ever been in steady, persistent pain for a prolonged time? You probably noticed your own personality change. In all likelihood, you were easily irked and had difficulty concentrating. Your interest and motivation were concentrated on how to relieve yourself of some pain and become more comfortable.
9. Newborn infants are motivated on this lowest level of Maslow’s hierarchy. Initially their concerns are biological. If newborn infants are provided with food, drink, and comfortable, restful surroundings where they are free from pain, their motivational needs will be satisfied. But not for long! Once this step is made, the infant quickly progresses to the next level, stimulation needs.

10. Just as the infant who is fed, rested and comfortable begin to look for something of interest, all children and adults also seek ways to escape boredom. However, as you might have suspected, the rattles and mobiles that satisfy the infant’s need for novelty and stimulation rarely, if ever, excite interest in adults. As you grow older, your interests and stimulation needs change and fluctuate. Maslow would consider that sexual interest, curiosity, and pleasure were stimulation needs. Although sexual activity is biological or physiological in nature, it is not essential for survival. Consequently, the need for sex is on the second step of Maslow’s hierarchy and is classified as a stimulation or physiological need.
