(I) Shivaji was born in the hill-fort of Shivneri, near the city of Junnar in what is now Pune district.
(ii) In 1638, he also received the jagir of Bangalore, after Bijapur's invasion of Kempe Gowda III's territories. He eventually became the chief general of Bijapur and oversaw its expansion. An early exponent of guerrilla warfare, he brought the house of Bhonsle into prominence.
(iii) Rajgad (literal meaning Ruling Fort) is a hill fort situated in the Pune district of Maharashtra, India. Formerly known as Murumdev, the fort was the capital of the Maratha Empire under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for almost 26 years, after which the capital was moved to the Raigad Fort.
(iv) However, of all the forts Shivaji constructed and occupied, the one in Pratapgad is particularly significant as it was the only hill fort built by him. Situated a little more than 1,000 m above sea level, the hill of Pratapgad in Javali valley was, and continues to be, surrounded by dense forests.
(v) The Shah agreed, and also gave him the title of Salabat Jung. Siddi Johar was assisted by Siddi Masud and Fazal Khan (Afzal Khan's son). The seige was laid on March 2, 1660 with a force of fifteen thousand.
