Q.2 Name the process to separate
a) pebbles from a sample of rice
b) tea leaves from tea
c) husk from grains
d) sugar from flour
Q. 3 A mixture of iron nails, salt, oil and water is provided to you. Give stepwise methods to separate each component from this mixture.
Q.4 Explain evaporation and condensation
Answers
Answer:
Q.2 (a) The process used to separate slightly larger particles from a mixture by hand is called handpicking. For example: Stone pieces can be separated from wheat or rice by handpicking.
(b) Filteration is the process to separate the tea leaves from tea as mainly the liquid components are separated from the solid components. i.e. tea is liquid and tea leaves are solid.
(c) Husk is separated from heavier seeds of grain by winnowing. Difference in the size of particles in a mixture is utilised to separate them by the process of sieving and filtration. In a mixture of sand and water, the heavier sand particles settle down at the bottom and the water can be separated by decantation.
(d) Sugar can be separated from wheat flour by sieving. Sugar particles being larger in size are retained by the sieve whereas wheat flour will pass through it.
Q.3 Steps for the separation of iron nails, salt, oil, and water
Iron nails are separated from the mixture by using magnets. Then by using decantation oil and water is separated. Oil being lighter forms the upper layer in the beaker and we can decant off the upper layer of oil.
Now the mixture contains dissolved salt and water. Salt can be obtained from the water by the process of evaporation. The water present in the salt solution will form water vapor and then the salt is left behind.
Q4. Condensation is when a gas becomes a liquid. It happens when a gas, like water vapor, cools down. ... In evaporation, matter changes from a liquid to a gas. In condensation, matter changes from a gas to a liquid. All matter is made of tiny moving particles called molecules.
