Answer:

A neuron (or neurone) is a nerve cell that carries electrical impulses. Neurons are the basic units of our nervous system. Neurons have a cell body (soma or cyton), dendrites and an axon. Dendrites and axons are nerve fibers. There are about 86 billion neurons in the human brain, which is about 10% of all brain cells

The structural and functional unit of nervous system is the Neuron.

  • In animals, nervous system is comprised or nervous tissue which have specialised cells called neurons or nerve cells. These nerve cells help in responding to external stimuli.

characteristics of neuron :

  1. Neuron is the largest cell in the body . It has a special structure but varies greatly in shape and size.
  2. Neurons carry message in the form of an electrical signal called nerve impulse.
  3. The functional junction of a neuron is called synapse . At synapse the , chemicals called neurotransmitters help in the transmission of nerve impulse to another neuron .

Explanation:

There are prominent three parts of neuron :-

  • Cell body or cyton
  • Dendrities
  • Axon

Cell body or cyton : It receives the stimuli thorugh dendrites and changes it into an electrical impulse.

Dendrities : These are branched processes connected to the cyton . They receive stimuli and pàss it to cyton. The stimuli may be physical, chemical, mechanical or electrical.

Axon : It conducts impulses away from the cell body. It is the longest part of the neuron consisting of single, elongated fibre. It has an insulating and protecting sheath called myelin which improves the conduction of nerve impulses .
