Q 2. When does a gift become a bribe? Is inviting the officials to dinner bribery? Is giving them a new Iphone bribery? Why or Why not?
Ans. A gift is a product or services provided by one person to another person, free of expectation to receive anything in return. In the other end, Bribery is providing goods/services to a person with intension to receive some kind of benefit in return for those goods/services. A gift or bribery may be in Cash or kind, in the form of product such as Iphone or services like inviting them for dinner. The difference between a gift and bribery is a matter of timing/sequence of events. Exchange of goods/services from one person to another person before the work is done is known as bribery whereas if exchange takes place after the job is done and based on happiness, selflessness and on good faith is known as gift. Hence, inviting officials to dinner, giving a new Iphone is labelled as bribery instead of gift based on the fact that it was provided to expedite, unfair benefit/gain from an action.
