  • Lichens are very sensitive to sulphur dioxide gas (SO2), which is released by burning of fossil fuels from automobiles. Delhi is highly polluted city due to number of vehicles running on the roads. Lichens cannot grow in such conditions. Manali and Darjeeling do not have much air pollution as compared to Delhi, so the lichens commonly grow in these places.
