In future, NLP will move beyond both statistical and rule based systems to real natural understanding of language. There are already some improvements are there. Facebook tried to use deeplearning to understand text without parsing, tags, NER etc. Google is trying convert language into maths.

Ambiguity. The main challenge of NLP is the understanding and modeling of elements within a variable context. In a natural language, words are unique but can have different meanings depending on the context resulting in ambiguity on the lexical, syntactic, and semantic levels
