Alauddin Khalji was a good administrator because he effectively held out against the threat of attacks by the Mongols.

  • During the notable reign of Alauddin and initial years of specific rule of Muhammad Tughluq, Mongolian attacks on the Delhi Sultanate increased.
  • Under these two rulers, a massive standing army was constituted to confront Mongolian invasions. He also formed for his gallant soldiers a regiment town called Siri.
  • He began paying them wages in cash instead of iqtas. In Delhi, he properly regulated the reasonable prices of goods.
  • Yet he was adopting a 'token currency, made of cheap metals, instead of regulating costs. He did so to mobilise capital to fight courageously against the Mongolian Army.
  • Likewise, his administrative structure made him very effective, and he successfully withstood the Mongols' threat of invasion.
