We know that iron, when exposed to outer atmospheric oxygen filled environment acquires rust on its surface which is nothing but iron oxide in the form of dull coating. Similarly copper vessels, when exposed to outer environment acquires green dull coating of carbon hydroxide and copper carbonate.

The green layer is formed due to the reaction of copper and outer gaseous environment.
