Q.25. Different metals show different reactivity towards oxygen. Metals like sodium and potassiu
react so vigorously that they catch fire when kept in open. Metal oxides are in general basic i
nature. But there are some oxides which show both acidic and basic properties.
(1) How are reactive metals like sodium stored safely to prevent their loss.
(ii) Write the reaction of a basic metal oxide with HCl. Give the chemical equation.
(iii) Name an amphoteric oxide.
(iv) Write the reaction of Al2O3 with sodium hydroxide with the help of a chemical equation.
(v) What will be obtained when we dissolve Na2O in water?

Answer:
1) They are stored in kerosene oil to prevent from coming in contact with air as they catch fire..
2) Reaction with a basic metal oxide -:
HCl + NaOH --- NaCl + H2 ( hydrogen gas)
3)Al2O3 (alluminium oxide) an example of amphoteric oxide..
4) Al2O3 + NaOH ---NaAlO2+ H2O
5) Na2O + H2O --- NaOH.
