Answer:
Because I believe Sanskrit to be an energetic language that benefits the devotee through vibration, I chant mantras aloud in Sanskrit. However, since Sanskrit benefits us through its much subtler vibrations, I also chant mantras mentally (in silence). Since we are encouraged to look within, my silent practice has increased; the loud one has decreased. Chanting mantras in silence is also great when you’re in the midst of a crowd going somewhere or when you want to withdraw from your surroundings and go within for a while. It helps you detach from chaotic energies by balancing yours.
Having said this, I also believe that the benefits of the spiritual literature in Sanskrit must be present in all languages simply because the devotee might not know Sanskrit. We are taught that it is our attention and our intention that which empowers words and mantras. Therefore, if you chant the Bhagavad Gita with immense love and intense devotion in Hindi, it must be as beneficial as chanting in Sanskrit.
