Neuberg first coined the term Hydrotropic agents in 1916, to pronounce that anionic organic salts at higher concentrations that considerably elevates the aqueous solubility of poorly soluble solutes.

Predominantly, Hydrotropes are composed of a hydrophilic part & a hydrophobic part, but the standard Neuberg's hydrotropic salts are composed of a hydrophobic aromatic ring & an anionic group.

  • Anionic group- It is associated with an increase in aqueous solubility but the effect of anion on the phenomena is comparatively less.
