Simple Sentence :

  • Definition : A sentence which comprises of only one subject and one finite verb is called a simple sentence.
  • For example : Ram plays cricket
  • Consists one subject : Ram
  • One finite verb : plays

Complex sentence :

  • Definition : A sentence comprises of two types of clauses : Principle clause or independent clause and subordinate clause or dependent clause is called a complex sentence.
  • For example : I know the boy who came yesterday
  • Here principal clause is - I know the boy
  • Sub-ordinate clause - came here yesterday
  • Relative pronoun - who

  • Principle clause : The clause in the complex sentence which is capable of expressing its meaning independently is principle clause .

  • Subordinate clause : The clause in a complex sentence which is dependent to principle clause to express its meaning is subordinate clause

Compound sentence

  • Definition : A sentence which comprises of two independent clauses or two co-ordinate clauses is called a compound sentence.
  • For example : He is both a good student and an athlete .
