Q.3. Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions. A long time ago, there was a boy named David. He was good looking and very strong, brave and modest. He was his father’s shepherd-boy, and all day-often all night-he was out in the fields, far from home, watching over the sheep. He had to guard them from wild animals, and lead them to the right pasture, and care for them. Once, war broke out between the people of David’s country and the people that lived nearby, the Philistines. All the three older brothers went, but he was only a boy, so he was left behind to care for the sheep. After the brothers had been gone some time, David’s father longed to know how they were . He sent for David, and said to him, “Take some food and run to the camp where your brothers are, and bring me word of how they are.”David rose early and went to the camp. It was on a mountain. The Philistine camp was on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them. David came to the camp just as the soldiers were going forth to fight. He ran among the soldiers, to find his brothers. When he found them, he saluted them and began to ask them the questions his father had asked him to. But suddenly, there rose a great shouting and confusion among the soldiers. Men came running back from the front line of the battle. David looked to see what the trouble was . He saw on the other side, a gigantic warrior striding forward, the largest man he had ever seen. “Who is that?” asked David “It is Goliath, champion of the Philistines,” said the soldiers. “Every day, he comes forth and challenges us to send a man against him, in single combat before fighting a battle, and no one dares to go out against him alone.” “What! said David, “Does none dare go out against him?” David came before King Saul and said, “I will go and fight with this Philistine.” But Saul looked at David and said, “You are only a youth.” David said, “Once I was keeping my father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and look a lamb out of the flock. I went after the lion, and struck him and rescued the lamb out of his mouth. When he rose against me, I caught him by the beard, and struck him, and slew him!” “Go,” said Saul then. “and may the Lord be with you!” David took his staff, chose five stones out of a brook and put them in his shepherd’s bag and took his sling in his hand. Then he walked to meet the giant Philistine. And as the Philistine came on and saw David, he laughed and mocked him. David looked at him steadily. He put his hand in his bag, and took out a stone, and put it in his sling, and slung it. It struck the Philistine in the forehead, so that he fell on his face to the earth. And David ran, and took the Philistine’s sword, and made an end of him with it. King Saul’s men shouted with joy. David was taken to the king’s tent, and made a captain. He became a man in the king’s service. 1) Why was David said to be his father’s shepherd – boy? 2) What trouble did David see in the camp? What was the challenge? 3) Which things did David carry with him when he went to fight Goliath? 4) How was David rewarded for his victory? Do you think he was happy about it? 5) Suggest a suitable title and justify your answer.
