The reason is that police can force an accused to give a false statement, maybe by beating him up, or by other ways. Thus courts dont accept confessions made in custody, since they can be biased

If confessions to police were allowed to be proved in evidence, the police would torture the accused and thus force him to confess to a crime which he might not have a committed and these types of confessions can be caused by inducement, threat or promise having reference to the charge and proceeding from a person in authority. A confession so obtained would naturally be unreliable.
