Q. 36 (2*7 + 1*
A metal oxide P reacts with water and forms a metal hydroxide Q. On the other hand, a gas R is obtained
at a anode during the electrolysis of brine. Now, when R is passed over dry Q it gives compound 5
which is used for disinfecting drinking water.
a) Identify P,Q,R,S. Write the chemical equations involved.
b) Name the process used in the formation of R and write two uses of R.
Answers
Answer:
NUB
TAKE A TEA SPOON
P is CaO
Q is Ca(OH)₂
R is Cl₂
S is Ca(OCl)₂
Explanation:
We know that on electrolysis of Brine solution, at the anode, Chloride ion is oxidised to Chlorine gas (Cl₂)
Therefore, R is Cl₂
When R (Cl₂) is passed over dry Q then compound S is obtained which is used to disinfecting drinking water
Therefore, the compound S can be bleaching powder [Ca(OCl)₂]
In this case the the compound Q which is a metal hydroxide will be Ca(OH)₂
Therefore, the metal oxide P will be CaO
The equations will be
CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)₂
NaCl → Na⁺ + Cl⁻
Cl⁻ + Cl⁻ → Cl₂ + 2e⁻
2Ca(OH)₂ + 2Cl₂ → Ca(OCl)₂ + CaCl₂ + 2H₂O
The process of obtaining Cl₂ is known as chloralkali process
The two uses of Cl₂ are as follows:
(i) Cl₂ is used as disinfectant both for drinking water and swimming pool water
(ii) Cl₂ is used as bleaching agent
Hope this answer is helpful.
