View the re-draw first:
> Since 4 (from the 4-8-4 triangle) is directly connected to both x and y, it is effectively only between them, and doesn't contribute to the other branches.
> 8 and 2 have common beginning and ending terminals - they are in parallel, and so are the 4 and 6 on the right hand side.
Using the re-draw:
C and D in parallel: effective = 1.6 ohms.
E and F in parallel: effective = 2.4 ohms.
(CD) + (EF) = 1.6 ohms + 2.4 ohms = 4 ohms.
We now have 3 branches with effective 4 ohms each.
These are in parallel => net resistance between x and y = 4/3 ohms (3).
