Q-4. (B) Read the passage and answer the following questions. 05

Have you heard of Olive Ridley turtles? They are the smallest among all the sea turtles and

they were earlier found in abundance. These turtles are facing a serious threat today and

need to be protected. They come under the category of species classified as ‘vulnerable’. It

is interesting to know why these turtles are called Olive Ridley turtles. The word ‘olive’

comes from their olive-colored shells. The shells are heart-shaped. These turtles can growup to nearly 2 feet in length and weigh a maximum of 50 kilograms each. They prey on

snails, jellyfish, shrimps, crabs and molluscs. Most of their lives are spent in the ocean. In

India, Olive Ridleys are found on the coast of Orissa where they nest and the baby turtles

are hatched. These tiny hatçhlings are in danger of being hunted down by jackals, hyenas,

fiddler crabs and feral or wild dogs. Many of these hatchlings thus lose their lives and their

numbers are diminishing fast. Moreover, the fishing methods adopted, the exploitation of

beaches for ports, resorts and tourist centers have resulted in destroying the habitat and

nesting areas of these turtles. Many of the adult turtles fall a prey to fishing nets. Olive

Ridley turtles are hunted for their shells, leather and meat.

1. Why are Olive Ridley turtles so called?

2. To what length does an Olive Ridley turtle grow?

3. Which are the animals that pose a threat to Olive Ridleys?
