Given : In an office there are Grade A and Grade B clerks.

Each clerk contributes as many rupees as the number of clerks in his Grade.

After adding the contribution of Rs. 33 from the manager the total collection was Rs. 350.

To Find :

How many clerks are there in the office ?

(1) 25 (2) 20 (3) 26 (4) Data inadequate (5) None of these

Solution:

Total contribution =  Rs350

Contribution from manager = Rs 33

Contribution from clerks = 350 - 33 = 317 Rs

Contribution from grade A clerks = A²

Contribution from grade B clerks = B²

where A and B are number of clerks  respectively

317 < 324

317  <  18²

317 = A² + B²

try combination

371 = 17² +  28

371 = 16² +  61

371 = 15²  + 92

371 = 14² + 121  = 14² + 11²

371 = 13²  + 148

371 = 12²  + 173

Hence only possible combination is   14² + 11²

So number of clerks = 14 + 11 = 25
