Q.4 Take a large shining spoon. Try to view your face in its curved surface.
• Do you get the image? Is it smaller or larger?
• Move the spoon slowly away from your face. Observe the image. How does it change?
•Reverse the spoon and repeat the activity. How does the image look like now?
•Compare the characteristics of the image on the two surface.
Answers
Answer: The image formed is large when viewed from close, as the spoon is moved away from the face it's size becomes same at some point then as we continue moving it away from face the size of image starts to diminish and from much far it is not even visible ( point sized)
*On Reversing the Spoon*
It acts as Convex Reflecting Surface
When the activity is repeated ,when viewed from near the size of image is diminished and as the spoon is moved away the size becomes highly diminished
Explanation:
Observations
Observation 1st
● The inner curved surface of a large shining spoon acts as
a concave mirror. The object is our face. When the
spoon is at a small distance from the object, it lies
between pole and focus of concave mirror. We observe
enlarged and erect image of our face.
● When we move the spoon slowly away from our face we
observe that the image, i.e. our face becomes inverted.
Observation 2nd
● When we reverse the spoon, its curved surface/position
is bulged out. It behaves as a convex mirror.
● The image of our face is virtual, erect and diminished. As
we move the spoon away from our face, the image
moves away till it is at the focus of the mirror. Thus, the
image continues to be virtual, erect and diminished.
