Polytrichum is a genus of mosses — commonly called haircap moss or hair moss — which contains approximately 70 species that cover a cosmopolitan distribution. (Less common vernacular names include bird wheat and pigeon wheat.)
Lycopodium is a sporophytic plant and reproduces sexually. The plants are homosporous i.e., produces only one type of spores (without differentiation of mega- and microspores). These spores are produced in sporangia which, in turn, are produced on fertile leaves known as sporophylls.
d'Herelle (1917) termed the virus which destroys bacteria as bacteriophage, which literally means 'bacteria eaters' (Greek phage-to eat). They are also known as phages. Bacteriophage are obligate parasites and are dependent on living bacteria for their growth. They may be found in nature where bacteria are growing.
