The man had 6 L of milk originally in the container.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the total amount of milk be x L

Given:

The man tripped and half of the milk spilled in the soil, so remaining milk is ½ x L

Then he spilled 1/3rd of the remaining in water = 1/3 (1/2 x) = 1/6 x L

Thus, according to the question:

1/2 x + 1/6 x + 2 = x

X – ½ x -1/6 x = 2

6x – 3x – x /6 = 2

2x = 12

X = 6

Thus, the man has 6 L of milk originally in the container.
