SOLUTION

GIVEN

On a journey across Mumbai, a taxi moves average 25 km per hr for 50 % of the distance, 20 km per hr for 40% of it and 10 km per hr for remaining.

TO DETERMINE

The average speed in (km/hr) for the complete journey

EVALUATION

Let total journey = 100x km

The taxi moves average 25 km per hr for 50 % of the distance

50% of the distance = 50x km

Time taken = 50x/25 hour = 2x hour

The taxi moves average 20 km per hr for 40 % of the distance

40% of the distance = 40x km

Time taken = 40x/20 hour = 2x hour

Remaining distance

= 100x - 50x - 40x km

= 10x km

Time taken when speed is 10km/hr

= 10x/10 hour

= x hour

Total distance travelled = 100x km

Total time taken

= ( 2x + 2x + x ) km

= 5x km

Hence the required average speed

= 100x/5x km/hour

= 20 km/hour
