Why is it not equal when travelling backwards?

We know that displacement is a vector quantity and distance is a scalar quality.

Suppose you walk on a line PQR, say you walk from P to R and then back to Q.

Now your total displacement will be given by the equation PR – RQ because displacement considers direction.

But, it is important to note that the distance travelled will be PR + RQ because the distance is a scalar quantity and doesn’t consider direction.
