Q. 6. Explain the differences between making New Wave films and the conventional
ones?
Ans. New Wave films are also known as Art films or Parallel films. They are in a way
different from the mainstream commercial films. In Indian cinema, it is a specific
movement, known for its serious content, realism and naturalism. Such films are
made with a keen eye on the socio-political climate of that particular time. This
movement is different from mainstream Bollywood cinema and began around the
same time as the French New Wave and Japanese New Wave. The movement in
India was initially led by Bengali cinema which included acclaimed film makers
such as Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak and others. Then it gained
prominence in the other film industries of India. The New Wave Cinema
movement began to take shape from the late 1940s to the 1960s. This period
considered the Golden Age of Indian cinema. This cinema borrowed heavily on
the Indian literature of the times. Thus it became an important study of the
contemporary Indian society. By the early 1990s, the rising costs involved in film
production and the commercialization parallel cinema, and it declined.
