Given : A tap situated at a height of 10 m  leaks and the water drops fall at  regular intervals.

When the first drop  reaches the ground, the 5th drop  is about to leave the tap

To Find : separation between the second and  the third drops

Solution:

Tap Height = 10 m

S = ut + (1/2)at²

u = 0

a = g = 10 m/s²

Time to reach ground = t sec

=> 10 = 0 + (1/2)(10)t²

=> t = √2 sec

1st dropped fallen at t = 0

5th drop fallen at  t = √2 sec

Time Gap between each consecutive drop = √2/4  Sec

2nd  drop fallen at √2/4  hence traveled for  √2 - √2/4  = 3√2/4

3rd  drop fallen at  2√2/4 = √2/2 Sec hence traveled for √2/2 Sec

Distance covered by 2nd drop

=  (1/2)(10) (3√2/4 )²

= 45/8  m

Distance covered by 3rd drop

=  (1/2)(10) (√2/2 )²

= 5/2  m

separation between the second and  the third drops  = 45/8 - 5/2

= 25/8 m

separation between the second and  the third drops is  25/8 m
