Answer:

Through the short story, Narayan conveys that the cycle of life might not favor equally at all times, but we must have the resilience and perseverance to see it all through till the end with hope and optimism.

Explanation:

The Axe narrates the story of Velan, who was born and brought up in an extremely poor family. After facing humiliation at the hands of his father, he left his village and traveled to a distant land where he was employed as a gardener. He tended to the plants with utmost care and consequently, the garden was very well maintained.

However, things turned for the worse after his master died and the mansion along with the garden, that Velan had tended to like his own child, was inherited by his son. The son eventually sold the entire piece of land to a company that was to build small houses on the plot. In that event, he realized that all that he had worked thus hard for his entire life, that is his garden, would be demolished and there was nothing that he can possibly do to help the situation, thus retreats, most probably, to his village.
