Q:6 Write the following answers ( a) State the location of salivary glands ? ((b) Why carnivores have shorter small intestine ? (c) How do villi increase the surface area ?
Answers
Answer:
The salivary glands are located in several areas around the mouth and have ducts connected to both the upper and lower jaw. This ensures that saliva evenly coats the inner lining of the mouth. You can feel the end of these ducts just below your tongue and along the inside of your upper lip.
a.
In addition to numerous small glands in the tongue, palate, lips, and cheeks, human beings have three pairs of major salivary glands that open into the mouth through well-developed ducts. The parotid salivary glands, the largest of the three, are located between the ear and ascending branch of the lower jaw.
b.
Carnivores eat a smaller amount of food compared to herbivores, and it is in the form of high energy molecules which are relatively easy to digest, compared to the plant material that herbivores eat, which contains cellulose. Therefore, carnivores have a smaller intestine.
c.
The small intestine is folded into villi which has many microvilli. The villi has a finger like structure and the microvilli acts as a hairlike on those fingers. Both of them expand to increase the surface area so more nutrients can be absorbed. They both are made up of a single layer of cells.
