A magnesium atom will lose 2 electrons to form a stable 2+ ion. Chlorine is in group 7 of the periodic table. A chlorine atom will gain 1 electron to form a stable 1- ion, forms the ionic bond between magnesium and chlorine.

In the Dow process, magnesium chloride is regenerated from magnesium hydroxide using hydrochloric acid: Mg(OH)2(s) + 2 HCl(aq) → MgCl2(aq) + 2 H2O(l) It can also be prepared from magnesium carbonate by a similar reaction. Derivatives with tetrahedral Mg2+ are less common.
