1. Some claim Indian agriculture began by 9000 BC as a result of early cultivation of plants, and domestication of crops and animals. Settled life soon followed with implements and techniques being developed for agriculture. Double monsoons led to two harvests being reaped in one year.

2. By the Neolithic Age, clay modelling in the form of pottery had taken on a life of its own. This pottery was used for religious rituals, for cooking, and for the bearing of water and foodstuffs. Pottery could also be used when eating, as in the creation of bowls.

3. In the Neolithic Age, trade among settlements in the Near East and Mediterranean Sea grew. Trade grows as people seek resources not in their immediate area. One resource that was widely traded was the black, volcanic glass called obsidian. It made excellent blades.

4. Urbanization began in ancient Mesopotamia in the Uruk Period (4300-3100 BCE) for reasons scholars have not yet agreed on. It is speculated, however, that a particularly prosperous and efficient village attracted the attention of other, less prosperous, tribes who then attached themselves to the successful settlement.
