Mostly that the records were not written by peasants, but by clerics and nobles. Their viewpoint is far removed from that of the peasants (even if, as some monks were, they were of peasant background). Court and manor records are closer to peasant life, as they record verbatim accounts of quarrels, deaths, and other events.
