Let the radius of the circle be r, half the length of the chord will be . Also the distance from centre of circle d form a right-angled triangle with the radius of the circle r as the hypotenuse of the triangle h. The distance from the centre of the circle d =6 cm.

Given:

  • A chord of a circle of radius 7.5cm with centre O is of length 9cm.

Need to find:

  • Distance from the centre ?

Solution:

Let, the chord of the circle be AB of length 9 cm.

And, radius of the circle be OB of length 7.5 cm.

According to the question,

In △OBQ,

➜ OQ² + BQ² = OB² [By pythagoras theorem]

➜ OQ² = OB² - BQ²

➜ OQ² = (7.5)² - (4.5)²

➜ OQ² = 56.25 - 20.25

➜ OQ² = 36

OQ= 6

Therefore, It's distance from the centre is 6 cm.
