Q. A compound a (c2h4o2) reacts with na metal to form a compound ‘b' and evolves a gas which burns with a pop sound. Compound ‘a' on treatment with an alcohol ‘c' in presence of an acid forms a sweet smelling compound ‘d'(c4h8o2). On addition of naoh to ‘d' gives back b and

A = ethanoic acid(CH3COOH)

B= sodium acetate(CH3COONa

C= ethanol(CH3CH2OH)

D= ester (CH3COOCH2CH3)

Reaction:-

1) A+Na-----> B + H2

CH3COOH + Na----> CH3COONA+ H2

The gas which burns with pop sound is Hydrogen (H2)

2) A + alcohol----h2So4--> D + H2O

CH3COOH + CH3CH2OH------> CH3COOCH2CH3 + H2O

This reaction takes place in their presence of h2So4 acid.

3) D + NaOH----> B + C

CH3COOCH2CH3 + NaOH------->CH3COONA + CH2CH3OH.

Answer:

2 CH₃COOH + 2 Na ⇒  2 CH₃COONa + H₂O

      ( A )                                   ( B )

CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH ⇒  CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O

                        ( C )                 ( D )

CH₃COOC₂H₅ + NaOH  ⇒ C₂H₅OH + CH₃COONa

Therefore we identified

A - CH₃COOH

B - CH₃COONa

C - C₂H₅OH

D - CH₃COOC₂H₅
