Q (a) Draw the energy level diagram showing the emission of beta particles followed by gamma rays by a Co ( Z=27 A=60 ) nucleus.

(b) Plot the distribution of kinetic energy of beta particles and state why the energy spectrum is continuous.

Energy level diagram

Explanation:

(a) Please find attache the energy level diagram showing the emission of beta particles followed by gamma rays by a Co ( Z=27 A=60 ) nucleus.

(b) The distribution of kinetic energy of β-particles is shown in the second picture attached to this answer.

In β-decay, the disintegration is shared by three decay products, the daughter nucleus, electron/positron and anti-neutrino/neutrino. So the kinetic energy of electron/positron is not fixed. Consequently. the energy of spectrum is continuous.
