Only primary amines can give carbylamine test.

RNH

+CHCl

3

+KOH→RNC

Ar−NH

2

+CHCl

3

+KOH→Ar−NC

Here, R− may be an alkyl or an aryl group.

Secondary and tertiary amines don't give carbylamine reaction test.

Answer :-

In secondary amine and tertiary amine, nitrogen does not hold more hydrogen atoms, and also, a sterically highly unstable product will be formed if the secondary amines and tertiary amines would be reacted. And notably, alkyl isocyanides are the compounds that exhibit unpleasant smelling. Hence, we use this test for the detection of only the primary amines.
