the force required to prevent it from contracting /expanding under circumstances can be calculated as:
stress/strain=Y
stress=Y * Strain
F/A=Y *ΔL/Lo
as there is no increase in its length,then net force is zero.F=0
AS,
F=Y*ΔL*A/Lo
