1) Ships are made of metals (usually iron). Under the influence of oxygen and moisture, iron gets rusted to form ferric oxide. This ferric oxide weakens the structure of the ship. When ships are painted, the oil layer cuts off the supply of oxygen and moisture to the metal by acting as a barrier between the atmosphere and the metal. Thus to prevent rusting, ships are frequently painted.

2) In a humid atmosphere, copper reacts with the moisture to form a layer of basic copper hydroxide which is greenish in colour. This creates a green layer on the copper vessel.
