Answer:

Blood is composed of various components and each of these components perform various functions such as:

  • Red blood cell: Red blood cells carry oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our bodies. Then they make the return trip, taking carbon dioxide back to our lungs to be exhaled. Consists of Hemoglobin which provides red color to blood.
  • White blood cell: White blood cells are responsible for fighting foreign pathogens (such as bacteria, viruses, fungi) that enter our body. They circulate throughout our body and originate from the bone marrow.
  • Platelets: Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding. If one of your blood vessels gets damaged, it sends out signals to the platelets. The platelets then rush to the site of damage. They form a plug (clot) to fix the damage.
  • Plasma: All the above components float freely in plasma along with digested food, hormones, body wastes etc.
