Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: He said, "Have you seen the trailer?" (Direct)

He asked if I had seen the trailer. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'will' changes to 'would', 'can' changes to 'could' and many other words will have to be made. Also, if the sentence contains an interrogation, then 'said' changes to 'asked'. Punctuation marks other than a full stop (.) cannot be used in indirect/reported speech.

1) "How far is the nearest petrol pump?" said the stranger. (Direct)

  • The stranger asked how far the nearest petrol pump was. (Indirect)

2) "Will we get our papers today?" the students asked the teacher. (Direct)

  • The students asked the teacher if they would get their papers that day. (Indirect)

3) "Where have you kept my bag?" asked mother. (Direct)

  • Mother asked where I had kept her bag. (Indirect)

4) Mandira asked Tanya, "Which player is your favourite?" (Direct)

  • Mandira asked Tanya which player was her favourite. (Indirect)
