Humans can cause erosion by clean cutting trees and brush. Without the root structure to hole the soil in place it can wash or blow away. Agriculture causes erosion by overgrazing and plowing remove a lower ground cover. Plowing with the furrows up and down slopes can make erosion worse than plowing along the slope. Straightening rivers to improve navigability and reduce flooding increase the amount of soil washed into the ocean.
