Causes of Reformation. The start of the 16th century, many events led to the Protestant reformation. Clergy abuse caused people to begin criticizing the Catholic Church. The greed and scandalous lives of the clergy had created a split between them and the peasants.The main cause of the English Reformation was King Henry VIII's desire to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon.As a result of the constant shifts in religion, the Protestant Reformation affected the English society in a drastic way. The people of England were now obligated to choose between their allegiance to their ruler or their religion. ... It was a religion tug of way between the Catholics and Protestants for many years.
