Answer :
Any dielectric material gets polarized when it is kept in a electric field . The polarization of the material minimizes the effect of external field . Hence , a dielectric decreases the electric field when placed in an external electric field . As we know that dielectric is an insulator . Also , we can associate another reason for this . The electric field induces a dipole moment by stretching or re orienting the molecules of dielectric . Net effect of these induced molecular dipole moment is production of a field that opposes the external field . Therefore the dielectric gets polarized in opposite direction and electric field inside the dielectric decreases / reduces .
