Q. Give an account of the Northern Plains of India .

Northern Plains of India :

The Northern Plain of India has been formed by the interplay of three major river systems namely the Indus the Ganga and the Brahmaputra along with their tributaries.

The plain is formed of Alluvial soil.

The plane being about 2400 km alone and 2:40 to 3:20 km broad is a densely populated physiographic division.

It spreads over an area of 700000 square kilometre .

It is the most fertile land in India .

The northern plains of India are also known as Indo-Gangetic plains.

The formation of Indo-Gangetic plains is by the three largest Himalayan rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra are their tributaries.

The Indo-Gangetic plains are of three parts.
They are :

❍ Western part : The western part was formed by the Indus and it's tributaries most of the Indus basic is located in Pakistan and small portion is Punjab and Haryana.

❍ Central part : The central part is formed by the river Ganga and it's tributaries. this part mainly speared in central India of State UP, Bihar, Haryana, etc.

❍ Eastern part : The eastern part was formed by the Brahmaputra river. this is mostly is Assam and spreader into Bangladesh.
