Inverse square law states the following relationship,

for eg:-

If a body is separated by 2d distance then the gravitational force on it will become 2^-1 or 2 inverse.

that is it will become 1/4 th of original force

Derivation:-

let F be the original force

F=GMm/r^2

Now if the distance is doubled it will be,

f=GMm/(2r)^2

f=GMm/4r^2

f=1/4F
