Disposal of chemical in the Ganga river pollutes the water to such an extent that aquatic life suffers the consequences of it. Some of the problems are as follows:
• Some fish muscles of Ganga are said to have accumulated high levels of mercury, which is a highly toxic and deadly metal. This is taking lives of many aquatic organisms on a daily basis.
• The Ganges River Dolphin, which is an endangered fresh water dolphin, is believed to have a population of less than 2000 due to the continuous pollution of the river. Similarly, the Ganges Softshell Turtle is a vulnerable species because of the heavy pollution of the Ganga.
• Aquatic plants get severe impacts due to water pollution. The sewage water mixed in the water of the rivers, helps in the increase of fungus, algae, bacteria, etc. and makes the river filthy and unhygienic.
• Water pollution reduces the level of oxygen in it. Fish and other aquatic organisms start dying due to lack of oxygen in the contaminated water of Ganga.
• Polluted water of Ganga is not only unsafe for aquatic life but also for humans and nature. It is also responsible for destroying the beauty of the Ganga, making it one of the top ten endangered rivers of the world.
