If the coefficient of determination is equal to 1, then the correlation coefficient can be either -1 or +1

What is correlation co-efficient?

  • As the name suggests "correlation", determines the relation between two variables.
  • When the correlation coefficient is  +1, it indicates a positive relationship between the two variables, when the value of the correlation coefficient is -1, it shows a negative relationship. However, zero shows no relationship at all.

Why correlation coefficient can be either -1 or +1 when the coefficient of determination is equal to 1?

  • Since, the coefficient of determination is square of the correlation coefficient, when the value of coefficient of determination is 1 the value of correlation coefficient can either be -1 or +1.
  • As, (-1)²=1  and (+1)²=1
