Q III. Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. [12]
“A long time ago in England, lived a school teacher called Margery. She was a favourite
among her neighbours, not only because she was always ready to help them, but also
because she rescued and adopted different birds and animals.
One day, a traveller from London presented Margery with a new kind of instrument- a rough-
looking barometer. Now she could often guess how the weather would be, a day or two
beforehand. This caused a great deal of talk about the country, and so envious were the
people of the distant villages, that they accused Margery of being a witch. They even sent
someone to go and gather whatever evidence he could against her.
When this man saw Margery at her school door, with a raven on one shoulder and a dove
on the other, with a lamb by her side, the sight took his breath away. He ran off, crying, “A
witch, a witch, a witch!” Margery laughed at the man’s folly, but she did not know how
much folly was there in the world. Soon the man had actually got a warrant against her,
on the charge that she was a witch.
Among the judges at the trial, there was one who was unwise enough to think the charge
may be true; he had granted the warrant. He kept insisting that she must be a witch
because she could foretell the weather, and because she kept so many animals with her.
However, Margery silenced him by explaining the use of her weather- glass.
She was supported by her neighbours and the gentleman who had set up the school. When
the judges understood the nature of the new instrument, they realized that Margery was
blameless. They not only released her, but gave her their thanks for helping the
neighbourhood.”
