Let the denominator be x.

Thus, numerator will be x−3.

As per the question, we have

numerator is 3 times i.e., 3(x−3) and denominator is increased by 20 i.e., x+20.

The new number thus formed is

8

1

.

Therefore,

x+20

3(x−3)

=

8

1

⇒24(x−3)=1(x+20)

⇒24x−72=x+20

⇒23x=92

⇒x=4

Denominator is 4.

Thus, numerator is x−3=4−3=1

Therefore, the fraction is

4
